Law Enforcement Teaming Up With Charlotte Bartenders to Crack-Down on Fake IDs

In Charlotte, North Carolina underage drinking has become a growing problem in recent years. After a University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill student, Chandler Kania, was in a car accident after drinking underage with a fake ID and killing two local women and a little girl. With college back in session, this has police officers worried.

Starting recently, bartenders have been spending time learning the art of spotting a fake ID instead of memorizing the bar’s happy hour menu. Police Chief Mike Crowley showed Channel 9 in Charlotte thousands of confiscated fake IDs. Crowley says that many minors order these IDs online.

Officers are encouraging education among bartenders, “We want to tell the people on the front lines looking at these IDs to give them the tricks of the trade, the things we know.” The hope is to further prevent tragedies like Kania’s accident.

With the help of local law enforcement, Charlotte bartenders are becoming better at spotting fake IDs, a task even difficult for officers at times. is an education resource that is in no way affiliated with state, county or municipal law enforcement agencies.
