High-speed chases often make the news; with highlight reels of officers speeding down the highway after a suspect filling up prime time news spots. However, a 100 mph chase this past Wednesday has attracted national attention.
Police received a report of reckless driving in South Carolina and went out to investigate. They were able to catch up with the offending driver who failed to stop for officers. After attempting to evade officers by driving off-road and into wooded areas, the driver accelerated to over 100 milers per hour until the police were finally able to stop him on Interstate 95.
Identifying himself as Jake Broadbent, the driver was confirmed later by a former talent agent to be actor Jake Loyd.
Loyd entered the spotlight after playing the young Anakin Skywalker in the first prequel to the Star Wars film franchise. In the film, he played a speed racing young fighter pilot, and it seems as if he was channeling some of the old character as he led police on the long and unsuccessful chase.
Loyd has previously claimed that his role in the Star Wars film’s caused him significant stress as he strived to deal with the sudden and overwhelming media attention. According to Loyd, children would tease him by mimicking sounds and characters from the film. Loyd’s experience is not uncommon, with many child stars preferring to fade into obscurity rather than deal with the media.
While Loyd’s potentially traumatic childhood is a shame, it is no excuse for his actions. During the chase, Loyd repeatedly crossed into oncoming traffic in an attempt to evade officers. He endangered law enforcement officials and the people around him.
Loyd is currently under arrest and awaiting trial. His bond is set at $10,700.
