Step 1. Meet the Basic Qualifications to Become a Sheriff Deputy in
Chittenden County

The following standards must be met for the department to consider you for a job as a Chittenden County Sheriff Deputy:

  • You must not have any felonies on your record.
  • You must have at least 18 years old
  • You cannot have had any convictions for crimes of moral turpitude.
  • You must have a high school education:
    • GED
    • High school diploma
  • You must furnish a form from a physician’s examination within the past six months stating that:
    • You do not have any disease or disability that would interfere with your performance at the Academy
    • You are capable of vigorous exercise
  • You must produce the following items:
    • Recent picture
    • Birth certificate copy
    • Documentation showing your highest education level
    • Documentation of any name changes

Step 2. Written Examination

You will need to take the Vermont Police Academy written examination that tests your abilities in these areas:

  • Arithmetic
  • Observing and retaining information
  • Reading comprehension and judgment
  • Vocabulary

Step 3. Background Check

After achieving a score of 70% or greater on the entrance examination, the department will thoroughly investigate your background and character.  One aspect of this involves a check of your fingerprints with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Step 4. Psychological Test

With a successful pass of your background investigation, a psychologist will test you to establish that you are emotionally suited to be a Sheriff Deputy in Chittenden County.

Step 5. Attend Sheriff’s Academy for Training

After the psychological exam has found your mental state suitable for law enforcement work, you will undergo training in how to become a Deputy Sheriff in Chittenden County.

In addition to training in the details of becoming a Deputy Sheriff, you will also receive vigorous firearms training.  Deputy Sheriffs in Chittenden County are held to a very high standard of marksmanship and are required to use only iron sights to hit a human sized target at 200 yards 27/30 shots.
